Aston Villa midfielder Fabian Delph was handed a much deserved start last night as England saw off Switzerland with a 2-0 win to get their Euro 2016 qualifying campaign off to a great start.
Delph was tipped to replace Liverpool star Jordan Henderson in the starting line-up for the game but was named alongside Henderson on the left hand side of a midfield diamond.
The news of his start spread quickly on Twitter with several Aston Villa first team players rushing to congratulate their teammate.
The accolades came in from Andreas Weimann, Christian Benteke, captain Ron Vlaar, Gary Gardner and Jack Grealish among others.
Delph didn’t disappoint his teammates or Aston Villa fans because he produced a solid display over 90 minutes in an atmosphere that could have intimidated weaker players.
He looked nervous to start off with and was booked early on but soon contained his enthusiasm to produce a professional performance, which allowed England to control the game and they eventually got ahead.
The trick now for Delph is how he’s going to reinvent himself and stay in the England side.
If he wasn’t already, he’ll now be one of the first names on the Aston Villa team sheet that opposition sides look for and managers will work on ways to stop him from having an effect in big games.
For now, there’s no harm in basking in the aftermath of a very impressive first England start.
