The last time Angel Di Maria played at Old Trafford, it was a game of mixed fortunes for the new Manchester United star.

The last time Angel Di Maria played at Old Trafford, it was something of a mixed experience for the Argentina international.

Then at Real Madrid, Di Maria started the Champions League last-16 second-leg clash against Manchester United, the scores locked at 1-1 after the first leg.

In what was to be Sir Alex Ferguson’s final European campaign, United had held the Spanish giants in their own back yard three weeks earlier, Danny Welbeck scoring for the visitors before Cristiano Ronaldo equalised for the hosts.

When Sergio Ramos put through his own net to ensure United were both a goal up in the tie and an away-goal to the good in the second meeting, it looked like Ferguson’s fairy tale finish could be on. But Nani’s controversial sending off changed the match, with goals from Luka Modric and Ronaldo sealing the victory and leaving the United boss distraught.

Di Maria has since swapped Madrid for Manchester in a club-record £57million move, but as he prepares for his likely home debut against Queens Park Rangers on September 14, he will look back with mixed feelings on his last match at the Theatre of Dreams.

Di Maria started both Champions League ties that year, but he lasted only 45 minutes of the second leg before injuring his hamstring and being replaced by Kaka.

Until that point the winger had looked dangerous, but he would sit out the rest of the match, and watch on with the many others wondering which way the match would turn next.

Now a United player, Di Maria will be hoping his return to Old Trafford will see him experience another win, but this time without the injury that robbed him of the second half that evening.
