Strike partners for England at under-21 level, Daniel Sturridge and Danny Welbeck now appear to be competing for a first team spot in the senior side.
With Wayne Rooney captain for the Three Lions his place in attack is almost assured, and his former United teammate was handed a start against Switzerland after Daniel Sturridge picked up an injury last week.
With the professional rivalry, brings the comparison and varied opinions, and never one to sit on the fence, QPR midfielder Joey Barton knows who he would rather have in his starting line-up.
Prefer Welbeck to Sturridge. Although DS is a far talented individual. DW is much better team player.— Joseph Barton (@Joey7Barton) September 8, 2014
DW should start. Run the legs off himself. DS off the bench when fit. Better chance of his individualism working when opp players tire.— Joseph Barton (@Joey7Barton) September 8, 2014
Barton made those comments ahead of Welbeck's goal against the Swiss, and used the goal to justify his stance.
Barton's opinion will be disagreed with by many, after all - Sturridge is a striker who scored 21 Premier League goals last season for Liverpool. The most Welbeck has netted in one league campaign is nine.
The QPR midfielder's stance is that goals do not count for everything, but now playing for Arsenal, Welbeck will be expected to step it up.
With a better chance of playing up front on a regular basis, Welbeck will be expected to produce similar numbers to Sturridge this season - and Barton appears to have little doubt he is capable.
