A guide to Star Wars: X-Wing Miniatures and how to get started.

All you need to know to get started with one of the fastest growing tabletop games of the past year.

Star Wars: X-Wing Miniatures was released in August 2012 by Fantasy Flight Games and since then has gone from strength to strength, becoming one the most popular tabletop games currently on the market.

The game itself is a ship-to-ship tabletop combat game for 2+ players and can be as basic or complicated, as you want it to be. You have the opportunity to play as either Imperials or Rebels as you face off with your opponent in deep space, piloting the iconic ships that shaped the Star Wars movies.

The play style is turn based and has a basic sequence of Movement, Action & Shooting. Attack and Defence are dealt with the roll of dice and movement is based on measured turns and distances. Where this game really comes into it’s own is the poker element of not knowing where your opponent is going to go.

At the start of each turn players choose their next movement on a special movement disc, all at the same time, the disc is then placed face down and the ships then move one at a time based on their skill. This gives the game a real edge as it adds an almost poker like tension.

So now you know what the game is all about what do you need to start?

All you really need for the basic game is the Core Set and a friend. The Core Set comes with 1 X-Wing, 2 TIE Fighters, 10 pilot cards (including Luke Skywalker), 5 upgrade cards (including R2-D2), damage cards, tokens, mission tokens, movement disc, movement templates, attack/defence dice and rulebook.

This basic set up will give you hours of play, whether you choose to play a standard Dog Fight or one of the three included missions, before you feel the need to add more ships to your fleet.

It is also worth mentioning that whether you enjoy tabletop games or not the miniatures themselves are stunningly detailed and highly collectible in their own right.

We believe that this is one of the most fun and well thought out tabletop games on the market right now and with the added bonus of beautiful miniatures this is surely a must buy game.
