Reports on Saturday claimed Davide Petrucci had terminated his contract with Manchester United and was on his way to Romanian side CFR Cluj.
It was somewhat surprising, even if the Italian midfielder was in the final year of his deal at Old Trafford, but now the move has been confirmed, with the player posing in the shirt of his new club.
The 22-year-old was highly-rated at United and he had been expected to make it following his move from AS Roma back in 2008. But in the years that followed, while other young stars broke through Petrucci did not, to such an extent that he was still to make his senior United debut six years after his arrival.
Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio broke the news of Petrucci’s United exit on Saturday, and on Sunday morning a number of media outlets in Romania published updates on the player’s situation.
Stiridesport.ro claimed the attacking midfielder would arrive at the club next week, signing a deal that could ultimately stretch to three seasons.
The report claimed Cluj had wanted to bring the player in before, but were put off by United’s £1million valuation.
But Petrucci has moved quicker than had been suggested, completing a transfer that few saw coming, and one that the player will be hoping finally gives him the chance to play regular first-team football.
