One ex-Red has been writing about Liverpool's new Spanish defensive duo.
The two Spanish players arrived from Atletico Madrid and Sevilla respectively, Manquillo on a two-year loan deal and Moreno in a £12million permanent move; and Lawrenson has been impressed by what he has seen so far.
“Whisper it quietly, but both seem to get it,” the pundit wrote in the Liverpool Echo.
“Straight away, they know what their roles are in the team and what is expected of them.”
The young full-backs are just two of the many exciting new arrivals at Anfield in recent months, and the trick for Brendan Rodgers is to ensure he can mould them into an effective side.
But they have certainly started as they will mean to go on, even if Lawrenson has warned against expecting too much too soon from the Spanish duo.
“I know Liverpool have had a few Spanish players in the past who have done well early on – I’m thinking the likes of Josemi and Albert Riera – before tailing off," he wrote.
“Whether Moreno and Manquillo are the long-term answer, only time will tell. But so far, so good.”
That is certainly the case, with Moreno not only impressing in defence but also scoring his first goal for Liverpool in double-quick time, while both he and Manquillo will force the likes of Jon Flanagan, Jose Enrique and Glen Johnson to up their game if they want to maintain – or win back – their places.
