Everton have decisions to make regarding three of their current first-team squad.
Three Everton players have now entered the final year of their current deal, raising questions over which of them will remain at Goodison Park beyond next summer.
With players free to discuss pre-contract agreements from January onwards, the next few months will be vital for those hoping to remain with their current sides, and for those clubs keen to tie down their best talent to new deals.
At Everton, Leon Osman, Antolin Alcaraz and Sylvain Distin are all in the final year of their contracts, so who is Roberto Martinez likely to keep and who could be playing their final few months as a Toffees player?
Of the three players above, Alcaraz is the most likely to move on next summer. After all, as a centre-back he does not only have to compete with Distin and Phil Jagielka, but he has also seen John Stones impress considerably despite his tender age.
As such, the former Wigan Athletic player would be a good bet to move on, considering his lack of regular playing-time at Everton and the fact that at 32 he will know he still has a couple of good years left in him.
Osman will surely remain at the club he has served with aplomb. Fresh off the back of his testimonial, the midfielder remains a vital part of Martinez’s team and it would be a major surprise if a deal was not struck sooner rather than later.
The most interesting case is that of Distin, who will be 37 by the time next season comes around.
With Stones showing all the signs of becoming an Everton great, Martinez could opt to call time on the Frenchman’s career. But something tells me he will sign a new one-year contract as he could remain a vital part of the squad even if he features less than in recent seasons.
Likely to stay: Osman, Distin
Likely to leave: Alcaraz
