Mario Balotelli is a divisive figure, and his arrival at Liverpool in the summer transfer window has divided opinions.
The Italy international joined the Reds from AC Milan for a reported transfer fee of £16 million last month and made his debut for the Merseyside outfit last weekend.
Balotelli started the Premier League match against Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane on Sunday, but failed to score. The former Manchester City star missed a couple of good chances and was taken off in the second half, as Brendan Rodgers’s side went on to win the contest 3-0.
Some criticised his missed chances, while others pointed out that the 24-year-old showed good off-the-ball movements and linked up well with Raheem Sterling and Daniel Sturridge.
Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler was one of those who were impressed with Balotelli’s display against Spurs and has backed him to be a success for Liverpool.
‘Like most people, I was a little bit worried by what I have heard about Mario’, the Liverpool Echo quotes the former 39-year-old striker as saying. ‘But to be honest, that’s wrong.
‘You shouldn’t judge until you’ve met the lad, should you? I thought he was absolutely superb at Spurs. I know he had a couple of chances which he might have scored, but I was very impressed with the way he handled himself on his debut, in a difficult game’.
Balotelli has proved time and time again in his career that he can be decisive for his teams in big matches. It was he who provided the assist for City’s title-winning goal in 2012, and it was his goals that lead Milan to a top-three finish in Serie A in 2012-13 and Champions League qualification for the following season.
However, the Italian has often gone missing in matches. That he needs to overcome and find more consistency in his game. If Balotelli is able to do that, then he will prove to be a great signing for Liverpool.
