Liverpool were pipped by Manchester City to the Premier League title last season, and the sale of star striker Luis Suarez was a blow to their hopes of winning the league this time around. However, manager Brendan Rodgers has been backed in the transfer market, as the former Swansea City boss has forked out around £120m on a number of new signings.
Javier Manquillo, Dejan Lovren, Alberto Moreno, Emre Can, Adam Lallana, Lazar Markovic, Mario Balotelli and Rickie Lambert have all arrived at Anfield, whilst Lille striker Divock Origi also joined for £10m before being loaned back to the Ligue 1 side to give him first team football.
So far, Liverpool have seen off Southampton and Tottenham in style, but the 3-1 defeat at Manchester City showed that the Reds still have some work to do when it comes to challenging Manuel Pellegrini's side. However, Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler believes that Rodgers has spent wisely this summer, creating the best squad that the club have had in years.
"Full credit to the management and everyone involved in the recruitment process, we’ve gone out and signed players who can fight for positions all over the pitch," Fowler said. "You’ve got the full-backs, the centre-halves, all fighting for places. Nobody is really guaranteed a place, and that’s the way it should be."
"Of course, we all sort of know what our best first eleven is, but there are a lot of players who can come in and impress, and who will be hungry to do so as well. I think it’s as good a squad as we’ve had for many years at Liverpool," added the former striker.
Liverpool swept aside a previously unbeaten Tottenham last weekend in an impressive display, and if they can continue to play that well, then they should be challenging for the title once again - and it's largely down to Rodgers' new arrivals this summer.
