Everton manager Roberto Martinez has been speaking about the return of Darron Gibson.
The Republic of Ireland international has been side-lined with a cruciate knee ligament injury sustained nearly a year ago. But after seeing the player return to action for his country in midweek, Martinez is looking forward to getting him back into the Toffees’ first-team.
In an interview with Everton TV, the Spaniard said, “He’s ready to come back and make an impact here now.
“It was important for Darron to play in a game situation, in a competitive game.
“Now he’s fully fit, he’s ready to perform. It’s just about making sure we give him the right time to get that match fitness that you need, especially in the Premier League where the transition of the game is so fast.”
Gibson’s return will mean Everton have got something akin to a new signing after the 26-year-old's prolonged spell out of the side. While he will be aware of the importance of easing himself back into the side, he will no doubt be keen to build on the 43 appearances he has for the Toffees so far.
And he will also be hoping to add to his goal-tally, with that famous long-range shot in need of a dust-off and a ‘sighter’ or two in the weeks ahead.
