Football League expert predicts top six finish for Wigan Athletic

Peter Beagrie believes that Wigan Athletic could make it into the top six in the Championship table this season.

Sky Sports pundit Peter Beagrie has predicted that Wigan Athletic will finish in a top six position this season.

Beagrie, a former player for Bradford City, who now works as a Football League expert, says that Wigan have impressed him with their additions over the transfer window and their early performances this season.

“I expect Wigan to finish in the top six and, if the new players purchased over a hectic last week by your brilliant young manager Herr Rosler are able to settle quickly, perhaps the top two,” he wrote in a question and answer session on Sky Sports.

Wigan have strengthened heavily over the summer and went into the season as one of the promotion favourites and their early form has suggested that the bookies may be correct.

The Latics started slowly, failing to win any of their first three games, but two wins in a row since have offered encouragement.

Uwe Rosler did a brilliant job last year after taking over from Owen Coyle and if he can continue to guide Wigan in that upwards direction then their promotion looks almost inevitable.

There are a number of strong teams in England’s second tier this season, but few looks as equipped as Wigan who have put together an exciting mix of youth and experience.

The likes of Callum McManaman and Emyr Hughes are really promising prospects, but they are backed up by solid performers such as James Perch and Gary Caldwell and Beagrie clearly thinks it should work out to be a productive blend.

“There are some big and talented squads in the Championship but on any given day Wigan can beat anyone and in Callum McManaman (pictured), who looks back in the form and frame of mind that saw him tear up Premier League defences, they have a genuine match winner,” he said.
