On this day: Nani handed new deal; Ozil reveals reasons for Arsenal move

On the 5th September 2013 what were the stories that dominated the football landscape? Including Arsenal and Manchester United.

Let's cast our eyes back to this exact day, the 5th September 2014, but a year earlier.

What were the main tales from that day? What big events were happening in Premier League football?

Here are some of the big scoops from the 5th September 2013…

Wenger the reason

Mesut Ozil was talking about why he decided to join Arsenal last summer. The playmaker arrived from Real Madrid for a £42.4 million fee, breaking Arsenal's record transfer deal.

His arrival was a steer from the norm from the usually frugal Arsenal board, but Ozil seemed confident he would lead The Gunners to success in his first campaign at the club. He also had glowing words to say about his new boss Arsene Wenger:

"The coach is a world-class manager - he's demonstrated that for years. A lot of players have developed under his guidance in the past and that's why I decided to join Arsenal. I want to improve myself further and I'm looking forward to the style of play. Arsenal are well known for the strength of their technical game and their desire to play attacking football. I think I will fit perfectly into that."

Ozil went on to help Arsenal win the FA Cup in his first campaign, but would be the first to admit the fans have not yet seen him at his peak.

Nani way

A strange one from Manchester United a year ago, as they handed Nani a new contract. They gave the Portuguese winger a new five-year deal despite it being widely believed he was on his way out of the club.

His current deal was set expire in a year and United were not said to be keen on keeping him after a massive dip in his form.

But they did offer him a new deal, and are now paying him to play for Sporting Lisbon. Bad business all round.
