With Siem de Jong ruled out for up to four months with injury, Newcastle have few options and should aim to recruit Brazilian attacker Jonas.
Newcastle United’s decision to not sign another goalscorer before the close of the summer transfer window appears to have come back to bite the Magpies, after Siem de Jong picked up an injury that could see him sidelined for four months.
The attacking midfielder, who can also play as a striker, suffered a torn groin muscle that could leave him out of action until the beginning of next year.
De Jong’s absence represents is a major concern for Alan Pardew with the Toon manager under increasing pressure to deliver results at St James Park and now lacking one of his key summer signings.
With the close of the transfer window ruling out a move for even a temporary replacement, the Magpies could be forced to turn their attention to the plethora of free agents still available.
A rag tag group of players that includes former Barcelona star Ronaldinho, Newcastle would perhaps be wise to weigh up a move for another Brazilian with experience in La Liga.
Still just 30, Jonas is a former Valencia stalwart, capable of playing as either a striker or attacking midfielder, with eight caps and two goals to his name for the Selecao.
Currently a free agent, Jonas would also undoubtedly relish the chance to test himself in the Premier League, and could prove to be a canny purchase by Alan Pardew, as the Magpies boss looks to turn around the club’s fortunes.
He was released by Los Che after a three-year stint at the Mestalla that saw him score 10 goals last season, and 19 in consecutive years before that, after Valencia signed strikers Rodrigo and Alvaro Negredo.
A confident finisher who enjoys nothing more than cutting inside to shoot, the Brazilian would provide the kind of composure in front of goal that has been so far lacking at the club.
Newcastle travel to St Mary’s to face Southampton next time out in the Premier League, with the Toon keen to record a first win of the season in the top-flight.
Take a look at Jonas in action for Valencia - should Newcastle be looking to sign him?
