Liverpool summer signing Divock Origi led the Belgium attack in a 2-0 win against Australia last night.
The young Belgian completed a £10 million move to Anfield over the summer before being loaned back to Lille and while he didn’t score, the match provided a chance for Reds fans to see their new signing in action.
Origi grabbed attention with his impressive performances at the World Cup in Brazil, which sparked a mass frenzy from sides reportedly interested in doing deals for him.
However, it was Liverpool who won the race and there’s every reason to believe that Brendan Rodgers can turn him into a superb player for the club over the next few seasons.
Raheem Sterling is the perfect example of a player who has thrived under the guidance of Rodgers and there’s no reason why he can’t have a similar impact to Origi when he returns to the club at the end of the season.
It will be disappointing for Liverpool fans to learn that the Belgian forward didn’t get on the score sheet against the Aussies but he worked hard throughout the game and Marc Wilmots selecting him ahead of more experienced options speaks volumes for his potential.
He was subbed off after 81 minutes, with Mousa Dembele coming into the midfield to solidify things as the Belgians looked to see out the game.
Some have questioned, given his obvious talent, why the club sent him back on loan rather than included him in attacking plans for this season.
The loan deal allows him to improve his fitness and continue his development as he’ll play more games in Ligue One than would be the case in the Premier League.
The Reds have simply shown their hand to secure the services of an extremely talented attacking player in the same way that Chelsea regular buy top talent in West London before nursing them eventually into the first team.
Here’s what Liverpool fans had to say about his performance on Twitter.

Defo got the ability and physical attributes. Odd watching compilation of a striker who plays most the match yet doesn't shoot though #Origi— Wallace (@Wallace_LFC) September 5, 2014
Origi looks boss. Showcasing his talent, for someone lest we forget is only 19. Last player to do that was Sterling yesterday!— JATT LFC (@JATT_LFC) September 4, 2014
