Is this the £2.7 billion reason why Monaco loaned United Falcao?

Stade Louis II Monaco

AS Monaco's owner Dimitry Rybolovlev has just had to pay one of the highest ever divorce bills.

Manchester United shocked many on Transfer Deadline day when they made a move for AS Monaco striker Radamel Falcao. The Colombian striker has joined the club on a season-long loan deal, with a view to making the deal permanent should it prove to be a success.

Earlier this week AS Monaco revealed the three reasons why they had to let Falcao depart the club, despite their vast array of riches. They claimed that they needed to raise money in order to meet FFP regulations, pay a £41.5 million settlement bill with the French league and to cover costs lost due to lack of sponsorship.

But reports today suggest there might be a more personal reason behind the sale and sudden stop of funds at Monaco. The club's billionaire owner's divorce bill.

Dimitry Rybolovlev got divorced from his wife of 20 years Elena and this summer Swiss courts demanded he pay £2.7 billion as settlement.

Getting Falcao's wages off the cards will certainly make a small dent in that whopping bill!
