Ashley Westwood says that Tom Cleverley will ‘fit right in’ at Aston Villa.
The England international completed a deadline day loan move to Villa Park and has clearly already impressed his new team-mates on the training ground after signing.
The 25-year-old is expected to go straight into starting contention at Villa and Westwood, despite being in competition for places with the Manchester United loanee, has welcomed his arrival.
“I believe there are good times ahead for this club and we've strengthened our group now with the arrival of Tom,” he said.
"He's a really good player. I've met him this week and, even from that first day, you can just tell that he's a top lad. I know he will fit right in.”
The 25-year-old has been offered a fresh start at Paul Lambert’s side after what has been a rather tumultuous period of his career at Old Trafford.
After breaking through the first-team at United, Cleverley’s performances showed little sign of progression and the pressure became heaped on him.
Every mistake he made was seized upon and, in the end, the scrutiny seemed to get to him.
Cleverley began to look timid on the pitch and bereft of confidence, but a move away from the intense spotlight could do him good.
The all-action midfielder has proven a talented player previously and he should thrive in a new environment at Villa Park.
Indeed, he joins a club were the morale is markedly higher than it will be at United.
Whilst the Red Devils have faltered at the start of the season, Villa have thrived and are still unbeaten in the Premier League.
It is quite a turnaround from a side who were tipped for relegation by many and there is now a cautious optimism about the campaign ahead from inside and outside of the camp – as Westwood highlighted.
“The gaffer's brought in some experienced players now and all the young lads that were here two years ago have also got the experience of playing in the Premier League,” the former Crewe man said. “There's a real good balance now."
