The Football League have announced their Player and Manager of the Month awards for August.
It is imperative for a team looking for promotion to have a good start to the season, and the Manager of the Month award is given to the coach who has led his team to the most impressive run, in relation to their predicted results.
The Player of the Month title is awarded to the player who has the largest impact upon the results of games that he has been involved in. Although often given to strikers, there is no denying that their goalscoring exploits can be the difference between victory and defeat.
The awards for the month of August have been given in respect to the opening five games of the Football League season, and all three managers and players deserve the title bestowed upon them.
In the Championship, Kenny Jackett has led his recently promoted Wolves side to four wins from five games - with three victories over sides in the Premier League last season. Whilst Stuart Pearce has yet to lose with Nottingham Forest, Jackett has over-performed with Wolves, and the award has been given because of his astonishing results with a comparatively weak squad.
Player of the Month Igor Vetokele has netted five goals in as many games for Charlton Atheltic at the start of the season, putting in a man of the match performance with a two-goal haul against Brighton last weekend. The Angolan forward is currently joint top scorer in the Championship with Norwich City’s Lewis Grabban
The League One Manager of the Month title was awarded to Peterborough United boss Darren Ferguson, who led his side to four wins from five to have them sitting atop the League One table. Despite losing top scorer Britt Assombalonga to Nottingham Forest, Ferguson’s decision to incorporate Kyle Vassell into the fist-team has worked wonders, with the youngster netting four goals in August.
Barnsley midfielder Conor Hourihane was named League One Player of the Month, with the midfielder capping a wonderful month with stunning strikes against Coventry, Gillingham and Yeovil. The recent Tykes signing has started the season in impressive style, and Barnsley fans will be hoping he can follow it up with a fantastic September.
Morecambe started the season with four straight victories, including a rousing 3-2 comeback over Newport County, and boss Jim Bentley has been named League Two Manager of the Month for his role in the impressive run of form. Despite losing their fifth game of the season, and currently sitting in third place, Bentley’s abilities were displayed in the second half performance over Newport - with many praising his man management style for motivating the players to turn the result around.
League Two joint-top scorer Matt Tubbs was awarded the Player of the Month award, with his four goals in five games securing AFC Wimbledon vital points. A leaky defence has seen the Dons concede seven times, but Tubbs’s attacking instincts have seen him net more than half of the Dons goals this season, lifting them to a mid-table position. They will be looking to shore up their defence in coming weeks, otherwise Tubbs will have an intense season on his hands.
