Arsenal forward Lukas Podolski came on as a substitute for Germany against Argentina in Dusseldorf on Wednesday, but he failed to prevent the 2014 World Cup winners from suffering a shock defeat.
The South American giants were in control of the contest at the Esprit Arena right from the start and marched to a comprehensive 4-2 victory.
Manchester United’s £59.7 million summer signing, Angel di Maria, was the star of the show, as he scored one goal and provided three assists against the Germans.
Former Bayern Munich star Podolski had a rather disappointing game. Coming on in place of Julian Draxler (who suffered an injury) on 33 minutes, the 29-year-old struggled to make too much of an impact on the match.
On Thursday, Podolski took to Instagram to post the following photo along with the message: ‘Enjoyed being back at The Mannschaft last night, unfortunately not successful... We will keep going and focus on Scotland on Sunday!!’.
Podolski, though, was pleased to have worn the captain’s armband for Germany against Argentina, writing: ‘Proud to wear the captain's armband last night: What an honour!!’
Next up for Germany is their first Euro 2016 qualifier on Sunday. Joachim Low’s side will take on Scotland in their opening game of Group D in Dortmund.
