The Mirror have reported that Arsenal could be in line to sign Mario Yepes on a short term contract.
The 38-year-old centre-back is without a club and as a free agent, he’s free to join any side outside of the transfer window, which slammed shut earlier this week.
One of the areas Arsene Wenger didn’t address was bringing in a central defender, which suggests that unless he picks up a free agent, Calum Chambers could be subjected to a role in the middle of the Arsenal back four throughout the season.
We’ve considered three key questions and drawn some initial reaction from Arsenal fans.
Would he be a good signing?
His experience would certainly suggest so. He’s played for some very good clubs with his longest spell coming at PSG in France. He’s also accumulated over 100 caps with Colombia so he’s clearly been a top quality defender throughout his career.
What deal might Arsenal offer?
It’s unclear but a short term deal could apply to the first half of the season or the whole season. If any deal is to January, that would suggest Arsenal will sign a defender in the winter window. If it’s a season long deal then it would suggest Arsenal will hunt for a defender next summer.
Why did he leave Atlanta?
He agreed a one-year deal with the Italian club, which ended just before the World Cup. It was a deal put in place which paved the way up until the point he announced his international retirement. It would seem Atlanta didn’t want to offer him a longer contract.
Here’s some initial reaction from Arsenal fans to the news.
