Arsenal right-back Mathieu Debuchy has made a fine start to the season and he continued that good form with an impressive display for France as they defeated Spain 1-0 last night.
Debuchy was an interesting choice to come in and replace Bacary Sagna, with some Arsenal fans unconvinced over the ex-Newcastle star’s ability to hold down a slot on the right of Arsenal’s defence.
However, he’s excelled and was too difficult for Spain to get the better of in several ways. We’ve picked out six interesting stats from Debuchy’s performance against the Spanish.
88% - His passing accuracy. Debuchy was solid in terms of how he protected possession throughout the game.
4 – The number of aerial duels he won. Only Patrice Evra (6) won more out of the whole France side.
59 – The number of touches he had during the game. This was eight more than Evra managed.
3 – The number of interceptions and clearances he made. All three clearances were effective clearances giving him a 100% success rate in that area.
100% - Every long ball he attempted against Spain was accurate giving him his second 100% success rate for an area of stats.
4 – The number of tackles he won, which was the joint highest for anyone in the team.
What should please Arsenal fans is the accuracy of his passing.
Arsenal build pressure over opposition teams by keeping the ball at the back of the team, in the middle of the team and at the front of the team.
It shouldn’t be a major surprise that he did well aerially because of his experience as a Premier League player.
He’s a tough, stocky and aggressive player who is very difficult for opposition forwards to get the better of aerially and that forces them to play the ball on the floor where it’s easier for him to contain.
Here’s to hoping he can maintain his positive start throughout the season.
