Sporting Lisbon will try and get Arsenal and Manchester United transfer target William Carvalho to sign a new long term deal at the club.
The Portuguese midfielder was linked with £34 million moves to both Premier League giants over the summer but deals never materialised before the transfer deadline at the start of this week.
Both teams could re-visit the option of trying to sign Carvalho this January but Portuguese newspaper A Bola suggests that they could struggle as Sporting will offer him an improved contract to stay at the club.
What Arsenal and United have working against them is the issue of time, as Sporting have now had the pressure of the summer window lifted.
That allows them to go about structuring a new deal for the player, aimed at improving his terms and status, potentially extending his current contract beyond 2018.
Should he sign it before the winter, it will be a sure fire signing that any attempts from the Gunners or United to tempt him away from Sporting would be pointless.
Reports before the end of the summer window suggested Sporting had lowered their price to try and move Carvalho on before the deadline.
However, this fresh report contradicts that view as Sporting rightly try and keep hold of one of the best defensive midfield prospects in Europe.
Arsenal probably have the more pressing need for a player to come in and take a position in front of their back four.
However, Arsene Wenger does have cover there as Calum Chambers, Mathieu Flamini and Mikel Arteta are all well suited to sitting deep in midfield.
The Gunners also have an edge over United because United signed Daley Blind on transfer deadline day and have been tipped to make a big play for Roma star Kevin Strootman this winter.
It will be interesting to see what Carvalho does should Sporting put renewed terms to him as A Bola suggests.
