New Southampton signing reveals pressure to perform at St. Mary's

Toby Alderweireld says that he is under pressure to perform at Southampton, after signing for the club.

Southampton newboy Toby Alderweireld has commented on the pressure that he is under to perform on the South-Coast if he is to stay in the starting line-up.

The Belgian international joined Saints this summer and he will be looking to make an immediate impression - otherwise he could be forced to sit on the bench.

"I am getting the chance to show myself, but if for two weeks in a row I don't perform well, I will move to the bench," he said.

Alderweireld's capture was quite a coup for Ronald Koeman's side, given the 25-year-old's past credentials.

At Ajax he was tipped to become one of the finest defenders across Europe and although his form has dipped since it still comes a surprise that he has opted to join the Saints

The technically adept defender has signed a season-long-loan deal and he will be hoping to impress in England, after a disappointing year last campaign.

Despite his parent club's success in taking the La Liga title he did not play a central role and he now is under pressure to live up to the reputation that he earned himself in the Eredivisie.

If he can rekindle the form that he showed at Ajax he could be a great replacement for Dejan Lovren, who was one of a number of highly-regarded Saints players to leave over the summer.

The Croatian was joined by Calum Chambers, Adam Lallana, Rickie Lambert and Luke Shaw in a mass exodus from St. Mary's at the start of the summer, but since the Saints have done some enviable business.

They now have a squad which looks full of potential once again and the eighth placed finish which they achieved last year doesn't look off the cards - which is quite something considering many had tipped them as relegation candidates after the departures.

The challenge for Alderweireld and the rest of the Southampton squad will be to emulate last season's performance, but the early signs have been positive and they will be looking to build on the momentum around the club at the moment after the international break.
