It took until the closing stages of deadline day, but Arsenal have finally signed a striker.
Many Gunners fans had implored the club to seize the opportunity to sign a front-man earlier in the window, but Arsene Wenger held off until the last minute before committing.
In the end the arrival was a surprise one with Danny Welbeck’s £16 million acquisition from Manchester United set to be one of the most intriguing additions made over the summer.
Welbeck has a lot of unharnessed potential but, as yet, remains an unrefined talent and he will be the main-man up-front for the first time following his switch to the Emirates.
However, even though the pressure is on, if his time at Arsenal is as eventful as his previous appearances when playing against the North-London club then his five-year stay is sure to be a success.
Here is the story of Danny Welbeck's career appearances against the Gunners.
14th March 2007 – Arsenal U18’s 1-0 Manchester United U18’s
The first time Welbeck played at the Emirates was not in a first-team match, but as a youth-team player. Arsenal took on Manchester United in the semi-final of the FA Youth Cup in-front of over 30,000 people and Welbeck didn't have the impact desired. He was largely marked out of a game which Arsenal went on to win 1-0 - with Kieran Gibbs scoring the winner.
2nd April 2007 - Manchester United 4-2 Arsenal
In the reverse leg of the tie, Welbeck scored his first goal against Arsenal and it was vitally important as it sealed the Red Devils' progression to the final. The then 17-year-old scored a header in extra-time which completed United's turn-around from their first-leg deficit.
18th September 2010 - Sunderland 1-1 Arsenal
Danny Welbeck did not compete against Arsenal for another three years, but with Sunderland rather than United. The powerful attacker was starting to make his name in the game at this point and he played 90 minutes against Arsene Wenger's side in this draw. The Gunners had appeared to be heading towards taking home the three points, but a late equaliser from Darren Bent meant both sides shared the spoils.
3rd March 2011 - Arsenal 0-0 Sunderland
Welbeck would take on Arsenal again during his loan spell on Wearside and the result was repeated, as the two sides could not be separated. In a poor game at the Emirates, neither side looked like winning and Welbeck's shot, shown above, was as close as anyone came to breaking the deadlock.
28th August 2011 - Manchester United 8-2 Arsenal
Welbeck's first appearance in United first-team colours against Arsenal would come at the beginning of the 2011/12, as he set the Red Devils on their way to a resounding victory. Wenger brought his Arsenal side to Old Trafford full of confidence, but he saw them torn apart with Welbeck's goal the first of eight strikes which United put into the Gunners' net that day.
22nd January 2012 - Arsenal 1-2 Manchester United
The new £16m Arsenal signing actually scored his first goal at the Emirates two years ago, so he knows how to hit the back of the net in his new surroundings. The match had appeared to be heading towards a draw, but Welbeck's 81st minute winner capped off a fine result for United, then managed by Sir Alex Ferguson, as they tried to close the gap on Manchester City at the top of the league.
