Report: Manchester United failed in huge late double deal for defender and midfielder

Two more players could have arrived at Manchester United this summer if they'd had their way according to a report.

Manchester United tried to sign Mats Hummels and William Carvalho in the last week of the transfer window according to ESPN.

A report claims United approached Sporting Lisbon regarding William on deadline day, offering a player-plus-cash deal involving Brazilian Anderson.

However, the Portuguese club is said to have rejected the offer, while the player reportedly wanted a move to Arsenal in order to play Champions League football.

United are also said to have enquired about the possibility of bringing Mats Hummels to the club in a part-exchange deal with Shinji Kagawa.

Louis van Gaal’s side were said to be prepared to offer £20million plus the Japanese international, but that too was rejected, with Kagawa completing his move to Borussia Dortmund for €8million.

The report also claims United made late enquiries regarding Nigel de Jong, who had been linked with a move to Old Trafford all summer.

But the Netherlands international’s current side AC Milana are said to have rejected the approach out of hand.

If true, it appears United were well aware of the problem areas their fans have been shouting about for some time.

But ultimately, rather than solving the issues, they signed another striker – albeit an outstanding one – with four months until they can try again for the midfielders and defenders who could make them complete.
