Louis van Gaal’s summer clear-out at Manchester United concluded on Tuesday afternoon, with confirmation that Tom Cleverley would be the last name to leave the club.
After a hectic transfer saga surrounding his signature during the closing stages of the deadline, Cleverley moves to Aston Villa on a season-long loan, with the option in January to make the deal a permanent £7.5 million switch.
Either way, with his United contract set to expire next summer, the 25-year-old’s future prospects with the club seem bleak, and chances are that fans have now seen the last of him in the red shirt.
Well-regarded coming up through the Old Trafford ranks, Cleverley has made 79 appearances since his United debut in 2011, having previously enjoyed loan spells at Leicester City, Watford and Wigan Athletic.
Going on to earn the first of his 13 England caps in August 2012, his poor form last season, however, saw him miss out on a place in Roy Hodgson’s World Cup squad, while he also failed to earn a call-up for the upcoming matches against Norway and Switzerland.
An easy target for criticism following the disappointing seventh-place league finish, many fans have been calling for Cleverley’s exit for some time, despite his long-running connections to the club, and plenty made that well known upon the official announcement of the move to Villa.

All jokes aside I think Cleverley's stats sum him up, 0 assists and only 10 chances created in 22 games last season. Shocking.— Luke McCabeITK (@LukeMcCabeBambi) September 2, 2014
