Liverpool latest: Spanish Under-17 star signs, Flanagan fires warning to team mates

All the latest news, views and transfer rumours from Anfield...

Liverpool have enjoyed a positive start to the new season with wins over Southampton and Tottenham, though the defeat to Manchester City cast doubts over their title credentials. Manager Brendan Rodgers made a host of new signings, including two full backs - right back Javier Manquillo and left back Alberto Moreno. With the two Spaniards looking for places in the first team, youngster Jon Flanagan has warned them that he's fighting for a place in the team ahead of his return from injury.

"I don't think it will be too long now and I think I should be back after the international break if all goes well," Flanagan said. "It has been frustrating for me but I can't dwell on it. It was tough to pick up the injury in pre-season but I've just got to forget about that now and push on.

"It's going to be tough [to get back in the team] but I'm more determined than ever. It's a massive season for me and I just can't wait to get back now. There's a lot more competition for places, which is good for us. The manager has strengthened the squad with the new signings, so I've got to continue to work hard and then hopefully get a chance."

The transfer window may have slammed shut on Monday night, but that hasn't stopper the transfer news surrounding the Reds. A new signing was made today, with Spanish Under-17 international Madger joining from Villarreal. The talented attacking midfielder broke into Villarreal's 'B' team last season and has been tipped to develop into a top player - something Liverpool are banking on by signing him.

Whilst Madger did sign, reports in Germany suggest that Liverpool missed out on the signing of German World Cup midfielder Christoph Kramer. The 23-year-old is currently on loan at Borussia Monchengladbach from Bayer Leverkusen, and Bild say that Rodgers and co couldn't tempt Leverkusen into a sale as they'd prefer him to continue his development with Monchengladbach.

Finally, if Liverpool were looking for a midfielder, they should have tried to sign Xabi Alonso - at least that's what Jamie Carragher thinks. The Reds legend believes that Alonso, 32, would've been the perfect signing for Liverpool having already had a successful spell at Anfield, but the former Spanish international joined Bayern Munich instead.

"I’d have loved to have seen Xabi Alonso come back to the Premier League instead of moving to Bayern Munich. He’s such a good passer of the ball," Carragher said.
