Jon Flanagan has given Liverpool a boost by revealing that he should soon be back in action.
The full-back is currently side-lined with an injury picked up during the Reds’ pre-season preparations, but he has claimed he could be back in under two weeks if he does not suffer any further setback.
Speaking to Liverpool’s official website, the 21-year-old said, “I don’t think it will be too long now and I think I should be back after the international break if all goes well.
“It has been frustrating for me but I can’t dwell on it. It was tough to pick up the injury in pre-season but I’ve just got to forget about that now and push on.”
Flanagan shone for Brendan Rodgers’ side last season, making 25 appearances and earning an England call-up as a result.
But despite his outstanding progress the defender will find he returns to a Liverpool squad with considerably more strength in depth than last season and he now has to compete with the likes of Javier Manquillo and Alberto Moreno for a starting spot.
Not that it seems to faze Flanagan.
“There’s a lot more competition for places, which is good for us,” he said.
“The manager has strengthened the squad with the new signings, so I’ve got to continue to work hard and then hopefully get a chance.”
If he can replicate his form from last season, he will surely get plenty.
Do you think Flanagan will remain a first-choice option for Rodgers this season?
