Lamela was recently called up by Argentina for their friendly with Germany.
Tottenham winger Erik Lamela has thanked his club after getting a surprise call-up to the Argentina squad after star man Lionel Messi withdrew through injury.
Lamela has had a difficult time at Spurs ever since his £30 million switch from Roma last summer, but under Mauricio Pochettino at the start of this season, there have been signs that the 22-year-old will show why the club were encouraged to spend big money to secure his signature.
Sky Sports have picked up on quotes he gave to Central Fox, where he said: “Being called to the national team is the best thing that could happen to a football player. I will enjoy it and will try to give my best from me. I am very happy to be in the team again.
"To be honest, I was surprised when I found out I was being recalled, most of all because the list of players had already been done. At the last minute I was told that I had to travel to Dusseldorf and I am very happy about that.
"I had a long injury, so I am thankful to my current club as they have always backed me for anything that I needed.
“In fact, I feel that they have taken care of me, and thanks to that I have started the season in the best way.
“If I have a good performance in my team then the doors of the national team may keep on being opened for me, just like it has happened in this occasion."
Some were suggesting that Lamela could have been sold this summer given the lack of impact he had at Tottenham last season, but his form during pre-season, and the green shoots in his performances have earned him a call from his country.
Now fans of both Tottenham and Argentina will want to see him continue to improve and be consistent with his performances. If he can achieve that then both club and country will benefit from his talents.
