Chelsea confirmed yesterday Cesar 'Dave' Azpilicueta has signed a new five-year contract at the club.
After the euphoria of transfer deadline day, Chelsea concluded another piece of smart business yesterday with an announcement that Cesar Azpilicueta has signed a new five-year deal to stay at the club.
The Spanish defender has been one of the club’s most consistent players over the past 12 months and jumped at the chance he was given by Jose Mourinho last season, when Ashley Cole fell out of the side.
Azpilicueta is arguably the best full-back in the Premier League and can be just as effective down the right or left hand side of Chelsea’s defence.
He’s an extremely popular player with the club’s support base because of his hard work ethic and effectiveness at either end of the pitch for Jose Mourinho’s exciting team.
“Chelsea Football Club is pleased to announce Cesar Azpilicueta has today signed a new five-year contract,” read the club’s official statement.
“The 25-year-old has begun this season in typically fine form and is currently away with the Spanish national team having represented them at this summer’s World Cup.”
It will be interesting to see how Mourinho uses Azpilicueta over the rest of the season because his natural position is at right-back.
However, he’s currently being used at left-back, continuing the fine form he showed in that position last season.
Mourinho drafted in Filipe Luis from Atletico Madrid over the summer, which seemingly freed Azpilicueta to return to the right hand side.
However, as the old saying goes, if it’s not broken, don’t fix it and that’s the policy Mourinho has so far adopted with the continuation of his defence from last season, which was the best in the Premier League.
That bodes well for the Blues who stand a good chance of success on all fronts this time round. Here’s what Chelsea fans have had to say on the new deal.
Can't complain abt the best LB & 2nd best RB (behind Zabaleta) in the league signing a new 5yr contract #Azpilicueta— damionbowen (@kadenbowen) September 2, 2014
We've got one of Europe's greatest full-backs tied down for another five years. #Azpilicueta— Joey (@JoeyTheBlue) September 2, 2014
Good news re: Azpilicueta. In hindsight he and Hazard were the only good signings from that window. Great attitude & Bargain at £7m.— Myles (@mmunro91) September 2, 2014
5 more years of the freakishly consistent Azpilicueta will do us just fine. Great news.— Will Dubey (@willd268) September 2, 2014
