Chelsea defender Cesar Azpilicueta has taken to Twitter to express his delight at signing a new deal which will keep him at Stamford Bridge until 2019.
Azpilicueta, 25, has made 95 appearances for the Blues since signing from Marseille for around £7 million in August 2012, helping the club win the 2013 Europa League, before establishing himself as the first-choice left-back under Jose Mourinho last season.
The former Osasuna prospect has also broken into the Spanish national team setup in that time, making his senior debut at the start of 2013, and going on to earn a place in the 2014 World Cup squad.
The £20 million arrival of Filipe Luis from Atletico Madrid this summer had led some to question whether his spot in the starting lineup could be under threat, but “Dave”, as Chelsea supporters have dubbed him, has so far been an ever-present in the side which has claimed maximum points from their first three Premier League games.
A natural right-back during his time in La Liga and Ligue 1, the versatile Spaniard is one of the more valuable members of Mourinho’s squad, and the contract extension is just reward for his recent fine form.
