French giants PSG could re-visit the idea of poaching a key player away from Chelsea.
Any Chelsea fans hoping that PSG would now give up on signing players from Stamford Bridge will be disappointed this morning.
The summer transfer window may have closed but that doesn’t seem to have stopped the rumour mill from spinning round and the Daily Mail suggests PSG have their eyes firmly fixed on signing Petr Cech in the near future.
Cech Tweeted his happiness about staying at the Blues beyond the summer window, but PSG seem to see him as integral to their chances of winning silverware.
“PSG see Cech as the ideal man to help them win the Champions League, deeming him better than current No 1, Italian Salvatore Sirigu, and would have no problem matching his wages,” reports the Mail.
Cech’s options over the first half of the season look quite obvious.
Jose Mourinho will more than likely want him to be a mentor to Thibaut Courtois, stepping into the side when the Belgian is rested and for the domestic cup competitions.
How difficult that is for Cech to bear, we won’t know until the winter but that’s when PSG could make their move.
Cech still has an awful lot to offer at 32-years-old and it would be a shame if he doesn’t play consistently in the Premier League (or any other top European league) or Champions League over the remainder of his career.
Mourinho appears to have delayed the problem of losing Cech after handing Courtois the number one spot but it seems clear that PSG will pounce to snap up the Czech goalkeeper the second he starts to think more realistically about leaving the Blues.
Chelsea are under no pressure because Cech’s contract doesn’t expire until 2016.
However, that means that at some point during this season or this time next year, the club will start to think about a renewal or the sale of one of their longest serving players.
