First choice right-back at Tottenham Kyle Walker has had to undergo surgery.
Tottenham Hotspur have announced Kyle Walker has had to undergo surgery.
An official statement on the club's website read: "The England right-back's pre-season preparations were disrupted by the abdominal injury and the decision to have surgery was taken following further medical assessment by specialists."
There is no timescale given for the defender's return.
The timing of the blow is particularly cruel for the club, who given further notice could have entered the transfer market to sign or loan another full-back.
With the deadline closing last night, the news is certainly as unlucky as it is unwelcome.
Walker has not featured at all this season and missed England's World Cup campaign through injury, although did feature in pre-season.
Of the club's three Premier League games this season, Kyle Naughton has played one game at right-back, and Eric Dier two.
Dier himself has however pulled out of the England under-21 squad with an injury, the nature of which is unconfirmed.
How serious a blow is Walker's absence for Tottenham?
