Rio Ferdinand believes that his former club need the Michael Carrick to return to fitness, despite all of their extravagant summer spending.
United paid out a massive £153 million on transfers during this transfer window, but Ferdinand still thinks that Carrick will be key to them making the top four.
The Red Devils have added a number of high profile stars meaning Carrick will have a lot of competition for places when he returns, but his former teammate, who now plays for QPR, clearly feels that he can make an impact.
Ferdinand took to social media site Twitter this morning to say: “@ManUtd have gone huge! Falcao & di maria & the early signings...i hope they all fit in & gel. Need carrick fit too. The Firepower is nuts”

Carrick has been out for the entirety of Louis Van Gaal’s reign so far after damaging ligaments in his ankle, but his return will be a major boost for the side.
The England international offers the side a lot of qualities which have been missing for their opening season performances and, although the club have worked hard to amend their deficiencies, his Premier League experience cannot be undervalued.
Carrick’s ability to dictate play and act as a shield in-front of what has been vulnerable defence so far may prove to be just as vital as anything their new signings can offer.
The former Tottenham Hotspur man will also have increased quality to pick out ahead of him this season.
Carrick’s strengths lie in his ability to link up play, but last season he struggled as badly as anyone to cope as the Red Devils slumped to a seventh placed finish.
With more energy and more quality around him, though, he should thrive and Ferdinand clearly believes that his friend can still be a major player for Van Gaal’s side.
