Arsenal reportedly made a deadline day bid of €16million plus Joel Campbell on loan for William Carvalho.
That is the claim of Portuguese newspaper A Bola, which says the long-term Gunners target was the subject of one final push from Arsene Wenger.
The report claims Sporting Lisbon president Bruno de Carvalho rejected the proposal, with William reportedly available for no less than €30million, and excluding any Arsenal players on loan.
The 22-year-old defensive midfielder has been strongly linked with Arsenal in recent months, having previously been one of David Moyes’ apparent top targets at Manchester United.
The Portuguese international shone for Sporting last season and is widely regarded as one of the most exciting young midfielders in the game.
But for now he remains at Sporting, with Arsenal reportedly failing in a last-ditch attempt to bring him to North London.
The Gunners did tie up a move for Danny Welbeck, while other reports have claimed Sporting’s Primeira Liga rivals Benfica were close to signing Campbell themselves in a permanent deal.
But whatever the truth is, a player who would have greatly improved Arsenal’s midfield and may even have been the final piece of the jigsaw instead remains in Portugal until at least January.
As for Campbell, he now has the chance to show Wenger he has a big future at the club he has only recently returned to following his loan spell.
