Radamel Falcao signing adds mystery over Vidal - Manchester United saga

Manchester United have added Radamel Falcao on loan, despite his recent knee problems.

Manchester United failed to make a late move for Arturo Vidal of Juventus as had been speculated, instead deciding to sign a striker.

The club snapped up AS Monaco forward Radamel Falcao on a loan deal with an option to buy, a striker who can revolutionise their attack.

Given Falcao's recent knee injury, the deal is best in loan form, in case the striker suffers a set back. QPR midfielder Alejandro Faurlin recently suffered his third ACL tear in three seasons.

Louis van Gaal was not deterred however, unlike Vidal, who he was frequently linked with throughout the transfer window.

Falcao's addition does however throw uncertainty over why United chose not to push ahead with a deal for the aforementioned Arturo Vidal.

Vidal was only available on a permanent transfer, but the Red Devils had the funds to pull it off.

Instead the reason given for United pulling out of a potential move was manager Louis van Gaal's concerns over Vidal's knee, reported The Telegraph.

He was not fully match sharp at the World Cup, and missed the majority of Juventus' pre-season fixtures.

Vidal was back at his best for Juventus at the weekend against Chievo, winning five tackles, creating three chances and hitting the woodwork in a 1-0 win.

His knee problems have not been anywhere near as serious as Falcao's and his position of need, despite the higher fee, made him a more essential buy for United.

Why Van Gaal elected to gamble on one and not the other will remain unclear, and United fans will have to hope Daley Blind can help bridge the gap until the January transfer window.
