Dwight Yorke says that Manchester United’s summer spending has elevated them into title winning contention.
The Red Devils may be yet to win a match this season, but Yorke feels that their £153 million recruitment drive over the transfer window has put them back amongst the top teams in England.
“They are playing catch-up at this moment and they need to start getting results now, but if they can do that the confidence will generate and when that builds up you’ve seen what they’ve done in the past. There is no doubt in my mind Manchester United could go on to win the league from here.”
United have signed Ander Herrera, Marcos Rojo, Luke Shaw, Daley Blind, Angel Di Maria and Radamel Falcao in a summer littered with high-profile additions as they look to kick on under Louis van Gaal’s stewardship.
The initial signs have been discouraging, after the side went win-less through their first four competitive fixtures, but there is a new found positivity around the club after the lavish signings.
Out of the new recruits only Di Maria and Herrera have made their debuts so far, but all six could be available for the side’s game against QPR on September 14 and that will be the first true indication of how big an impact their investment will have.
Van Gaal admitted that the first three months of his reign would be tough, but his side have been unpredictably poor so far and the Red Devils will need a massive turnaround in their performances if they are to even get into the top four – let alone win the league, as Yorke predicts.
