Liverpool left-back Jose Enrique has acknowledged the competition he faces in the club's £12 million signing Alberto Moreno.
After a disappointing debut against Manchester City, Moreno proved against Tottenham why Brendan Rodgers made him his number one left-back target during the summer with a terrific defensive performance, capped off by an excellent solo goal.
He told the Liverpool Echo: “Moreno did really well and scored an amazing goal. For me the best thing about it was the pressing to win the ball back. That was half of the goal. How he finished was unbelievable.
“The most important thing is that we are a team. This is a team sport and we all have to fight to make this team better. Hopefully we can do even better than last season.
“I will have my chances. I know I have the confidence of the manager so I’m happy about that.”
Enrique is working his way back to full fitness after recovering from a knee injury that prevented him from making any significant contribution to the team last season as the Reds finished second in the Premier League last term. His return to the side from injury will be welcome given the extra fixtures the Reds will have this term in returning to the Champions League.
Moreno looks to have plenty to his game and isn't afraid to join the attack going forward, and given the outlay, combined with his fairly young age of 22, he is likely to be the number one left-back for the Reds this term.
But there are going to be opportunities for Enrique to prove himself in this Liverpool side, though it may be from the substitutes bench later on in games and in cup matches - or if the Reds are afforded such a luxury, the later group matches in the Champions League.
