Tottenham Hotspur signing Benjamin Stambouli began training at the club yesterday after clinching his move early on deadline day.
The French midfielder signed from Montpellier, replacing Brazilian midfielder Sandro, who was sold to QPR.
Spurs were not unopposed in their efforts to sign Stambouli, with Serie A side Fiorentina leading the pursuit of the Frenchman.
FIFA agent Fabrizio Ferrari has bemoaned their near miss, telling Tuttomercatoweb that the midfielder would have been ideal for the Italian club.
"Stambouli? English teams have great simplicity in the best bid and therefore it is not anyone's fault. The negotiation was good, the player I thought the end was going to Florence and maybe it was the best choice for him."
Fiorentina finished fourth in Serie A last season, but due to Serie A's lower UEFA co-efficient than England's Premier League, they did not even get a qualifying spot, instead entering the Europa League.
This may well have proved decisive in Stambouli's choice, and Tottenham can take heart from the calibre of side also interested in his services. Whether it transpires to be a good move for all concerned, will be judged on the pitch.
Are you confident Stambouli will be a success at Tottenham?
