Ex-Sunderland defender headed for Deportivo La Coruna

Modibo Diakité is close to agreeing to join Deportivo La Coruna having rescinded his contract with Sunderland.

It's safe to say there weren't many tears from Sunderland fans when Modibo Diakité bade them farewell, but he is wanted in Spain.

Diakité made just seven Premier League appearances for Sunderland after leaving Lazio in 2013, where he had been an authoritative and respected centre-back.

The Frenchman spent the end of last season on loan to Fiorentina, who decided they didn't want him on a permanent basis.

With the transfer deadline approaching, Diakité and Sunderland agreed the termination of his contract, which leaves the towering stopper a free agent.

Italian reports state that Spanish side Deportivo La Coruna are keen to add Diakité to their squad and are looking to tie up an agreement as quickly as possible.

Diakité may arrive in Spain later this afternoon to complete the details and put pen to paper because he is said to be determined not to lose much more potential playing time this season.
