Everton latest: Martinez praises Eto'o as a new striker arrives

All the latest news, views and transfer rumours from Goodison Park...

Everton had a quiet deadline day, with just the one signing arriving at Goodison Park. Rumours late into the night suggested that the club were looking to finalise a loan deal with Manchester United which would have seen Tom Cleverley make the move to Merseyside, but manager Roberto Martinez settled to just bring in Anderlecht striker David Henen on a season-long loan.

Henen is likely to join the development squad at Everton, but in case of emergency, he may well have a role in the first team. That's hard to see at the moment, especially with £28m signing Romelu Lukaku the star of the show and new addition Samuel Eto'o marking his debut with a goal - against former club Chelsea. The Cameroonian international impressed despite the 6-3 defeat, and Martinez praised the 33-year-old for his contribution, which included planting a header past Thibaut Courtois into the bottom corner.

"I thought he played with real experience, real know-how and you could see that every time he got involved in the action there was real meaning behind it," said the Spaniard.

"He really enjoyed his performance and his experience allows him to control the game well. He guided that ball into the net with real class."

Meanwhile, midfielder Darron Gibson has yet to play a part this season having recovered from a knee injury sustained almost a year ago. The former Manchester United trainee is set to make a return for Republic of Ireland against Oman on Wednesday - and the 26-year-old is hoping to take his chance in front of new manager Martin O'Neill.

"Being out for 10 months last season gave me a lot of time to think about things, and I think this is now or never, really, to be honest with you, so I am looking forward to the task ahead," Gibson said. "It just made me realise that I'm not getting any younger. I need to start playing games and I need to start doing well for myself. It's a big opportunity for me."
