Balague reveals why Manchester United signed Falcao ahead of Real Madrid

Spanish football pundit Guillem Balague has explained why Real Madrid backed off a deal for Radamel Falcao.

Manchester United sealed the blockbuster addition of Radamel Falcao on transfer deadline day, with the Colombian arriving on loan.

The Red Devils have an option to buy the striker at the end of the season, who was linked also with Manchester City.

He was linked throughout the summer, and last season, with a deal for Real Madrid mooted for the former Atletico Madrid striker.

Instead on the face of it, United truly got one over on the Champions League holders, loaning them Javier Hernandez, to create squad space to sign Falcao.

Yet Spanish football pundit Guillem Balague has suggested Real were never really in for the Colombian, explaining how the Red Devils were able to sign him unopposed from the La Liga side.

He told SkySports during their deadline day coverage: "He tried to get to Real Madrid but they wanted someone happy to be a number two.

"(They wanted) a Morata type figure, someone happy to accept there's away of playing, behind Benzema, their number nine. Chicharito fills that gap. Real were never an option."

Had it not been for Falcao's injury in January, Real may have been confident enough to replace Benzema with the Colombian, especially if he had been able to show his star power at the World Cup.

Their decision to walk away, appears to have been very much to United's gain.
