46 goals, 33 assists and more: What Southampton have bought for £10m

Southampton signed Sadio Mane on transfer deadline day, so what are the numbers behind his career to date?

Southampton completed some impressive deadline day business, bringing in Toby Alderweireld on loan from Atletico Madrid and signing Sadio Mane from Red Bull Salzburg for a reported £10million.

The latter is a 22-year-old left-winger who can also operate on the opposite flank or as a secondary striker when required.

In the latest in our series on the numbers behind a player’s career to date, we take a closer look at the new Southampton signing.

107 – The number of club appearances Mane has made to date. He has featured 87 times for Red Bull Salzburg and 20 times for French club Metz.

46 – The number of goals he has scored in that time. That is a remarkable record for such a young player and Southampton boss Ronald Koeman will be hoping he can continue that fine form at St Mary’s. He averaged more than a goal every other game in Austria, where he has scored 45 goals in just 87 games.

33 – The number of assists the new Saints player has in his club career. Not only a goal-scorer, the versatile player has regularly set up goals for his teammates, with all but one of those coming during his time at Salzburg.

4 – The number of times Mane has been sent off in his club career. On three occasions he was sent off for two bookable offences and on one occasion he received a straight red card. Koeman will no doubt be hoping he keeps his discipline in check now he has arrived in England.

15 – The number of games he has played for Senegal. Mane has scored four goals for his national side since making his debut in May 2012.

Verdict – Mane may be unproven in the Premier League but his form for Salzburg is impossible to ignore and there is no reason he cannot ultimately replicate that for Southampton. Given his age and the fact that Koeman works well with young players, Mane could excel following his £10million move.

It is a lot of money to spend on a player who will need to adapt to a new league, but Southampton have plenty to spend following their summer sales and Mane is well worth the risk.
