3pm Deadline Day update: Aston Villa bid for Spanish midfielder, Newcastle defender close to exit; Liverpool news

Breaking news:

Aston Villa have made a bid for Real Sociedad attacking midfielder Sergio Canales, according to Sky Sports News.

And Newcastle United defender Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa is expected to complete his move to AS Roma in the next few hours.

"I am happy, forza Roma," Yanga-Mbiwa is reported to have said by the Italian press.

Southampton have cancelled the loan of Inter midfielder Saphir Taider, who leaves St Mary's after just a month at the club.

Elsewhere, according to Sky Sports, Gremio centre-back Bressan will not sign for Queens Park Rangers.

"I wanted to stay at Gremio but of course the move didn't happen for other reasons,” he told Radio Gaucha.

“I still have a lot to do for Gremio and the club can do a lot for me."

On-going developments:

Sebastian Coates is believed to have arrived for his medical at Sunderland, according to Sky Sports news.

In other Liverpool news, free agent Victor Valdes is expected to sign for the club in the next month, while the same report says Fabio Borini and Oussama Assaidi could also leave the club before the transfer deadline.

Elsewhere, Leeds United are believed to be in talks with Fulham over the signing of striker Matt Smith.

Meanwhile, there have been no fresh developments in Manchester United's attempts to bring Radamel Falcao to Old Trafford, with the deal still looking extremely likely to go ahead.


Wigan Athletic have completed a move for Brentford's Adam Forshaw.

And Middlesbrough have brought Belgian striker Jelle Vosen in on a season-long loan.
