Sunderland confirm player exit - Serie A bound?

According to the latest deadline day transfer news, Modibo Diakite has been released by Sunderland.

Modibo Diakite leaves Sunderland having only made seven Premier League appearances for the club since signing from Lazio in 2013.

A physically-adept centre back, Diakite was loaned back to Serie A at the second half of last season and represented Fiorentina nine times in the division.

This summer, though, his permanent exit appeared to be a foregone conclusion as manager Gus Poyet stated that the Frenchman would be one of three players allowed to leave the Black Cats.

Last week, Diakite apparently had "ten options", Poyet said, however, none have yet to bear any fruit and so the club have ratified an exit.

"Sunderland AFC has confirmed that defender Modibo Diakite has left the club by mutual consent," said a one line statement on the club's official website.

It is widely expected that he will re-join Fiorentina, albeit on a permanent basis this time.
