Tottenham will welcome former France Under 21 international Benjamin Stambouli to their ranks, but he could easily have ended up at Fiorentina.
The defensive midfielder has joined in a £4.7million move from Montpellier and is expected to sign a four-year deal at White Hart Lane.
But things could have gone very differently had Fiorentina moved a little faster.
The Italian side were leading the race to sign Stambouli for a while with Swansea also interested, but it was Tottenham who got in first.
"His first choice was to play in the Premier League and Tottenham came in with a concrete offer.
"Fiorentina lost too much time finding an agreement with Montpellier. They took almost two weeks, that was their mistake."
Fiorentina may rue taking so long that Tottenham were able to hijack the deal and sign the highly rated 24-year-old.
