According to the latest transfer news on deadline day, Southampton have won the race to sign coveted Atletico Madrid star.
Atletico Madrid and Belgium centre back Toby Alderweireld, 25, who had alerted West Ham United, Newcastle United and Arsenal to his apparent availability this summer, is due to attend a medical examination at Southampton on transfer deadline day, today.
Alderweireld attempted four interceptions, 12 tackles and 17 clearances in four World Cup appearances for his country earlier this summer - and the player would represent just one of what could possibly be two additions at St Marys Stadium ahead of the closure of the summer market.
Southampton manager Ronald Koeman confirmed to Dutch website Helden Online: “I am still looking to bring in two more players, an attacker and a defender.
“Toby Alderweireld will undergo a medical today. Hopefully we can also add another attacker. I can’t say who we are working on.”
Southampton have ratified a plethora of player sales this summer, but have - to date - agreed terms with Dusan Tadic, Graziano Pelle, Ryan Bertrand, Saphir Taider, Fraser Forster, Shane Long and Fiorin Gardos.
In recent days, the club have also been linked with Virgil van Dijk, Nathan Redmond and Andros Townsend.
