Tottenham Hotspur are trying to secure a last minute deal for Jay Rodriguez with Southampton, according to the Daily Mail.
Spurs have been keen to bring in Rodriguez for much of the summer, but have left it to the last minute in trying to secure their man.
Mauricio Pochettino’s men have reportedly enquired to sign Rodriguez, who is yet to play a game this season due to injury, this morning with Andros Townsend set to be used as bait in any potential transfer.
Townsend has been on Saints’s wishlist for sometime – with a £12 million offer from them rejected last month – but as yet all of their attempts to sign the England international have proved fruitless.
Spurs seemed reluctant to part with the winger, who Pochettino has identified for a rotational role in his squad this season.
However, with Rodriguez potentially available he appears that the new Spurs boss could be happy to relinquish Townsend, leaving both clubs in a position to secure their long-term targets.
Townsend came off the bench in Spurs’ most recent defeat 3-0 defeat to Liverpool at White Hart Lane and it was his error which put the game beyond the home side.
The 23-year-old lost possession to Alberto Moreno on the halfway line, with the Spanish full-back capitalising and rounding off the scoring for Brendan Rodgers’ men.
That could be the last memory he leaves at Spurs, with his departure possible later today.
Towsend joins Aaron Lennon, who is linked with QPR, as two of a number of players who could depart from North-London today – with Pochettino keen to reduce his squad size.
If Rodriguez does join in return he could be utilised down the right-wing or as a central-striker and he looks an upgrade on anything Spurs have in their current squad in those positions.
There were thoughts that Morgan Schneiderlin could have joined Rodriguez at White Hart Lane earlier in the window, but any potential deal for the Frenchman appears to be over now.
