In the latest transfer news, Manchester United continue to make statements in the summer market.
While the combined captures of Angel di Maria and Radamel Falcao from Real Madrid and AS Monaco respectively have a grand marquee feel to them, the recruitment of Daley Blind at Manchester United is perhaps the recruitment that the Old Trafford side most desperately craved.
Blind has terrific versatility as he is adept in a multitude of positions including centre back, left back and holding the midfield. The erstwhile Ajax star enjoyed an exquisite club season last term, culminating in a starring role for third-placed Netherlands in the 2014 FIFA World Cup tournament in Brazil.
The 24-year-old now enters another stage in his career as he links up with compatriot Louis van Gaal at Manchester United, yet the manner in which he celebrated the transfer will no doubt have caused a wry smile from van Gaal's predecessor - Sir Alex Ferguson.
"I got a call on Friday night telling me that the clubs had agreed a deal," Blind said recently. "I was with my girlfriend and we went to my parents to drink a glass of wine," he added.
Ferguson was renowned for his fondness for a post-match glass of wine, even inviting rival managers into his office for a drink regardless of the result.
Blind continued: "I am enormously proud to be at one of the biggest clubs in the world. Everything has happened so suddenly."
United have engaged in a great rebuilding process following an abysmal seventh-placed Premier League finish last season but with the abundance of new arrivals, it remains to be seen whether van Gaal can engineer a top four finish or a cup win so that Blind has something else to celebrate at the end of the year.
