Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa is expected in Rome for a medical later today after a loan deal was agreed between Roma and Newcastle, it is being reported.
The 25-year-old had been searching for a new club after it became clear that he would have limited opportunities this season for Newcastle.
Marseille, St.Etienne and Bordeaux had all been linked to Yanga-Mbiwa over the last few weeks but the French clubs are believed to have taken exception to Newcastle's reluctance to pay a significant percentage of the player's wages.
The terms of the deal are believed to be a loan for the season with Roma having the option to make the deal permanent in 2015 for just under £4 million.
Yanga-Mbiwa would have to pass a medical and is reportedly already on a flight to Italy to do so and put pen to paper on a contract at Roma.
Roma are in need of a centre-back after selling star stopper Mehdi Benatia to Bayern Munich, but they have strengthened well in the transfer window and added former Chelsea man Ashley Cole and Davide Astori to their defence.
