Fulham bought Ross McCormack from Leeds for £11 million, although the Scotsman is yet to score for the club in five Championship games.
Smith, 25, has only started one Championship game for Leeds, scoring his only goal for the club this season in the loss to Bradford City in the League Cup.
Would Smith be interested in a move to Fulham? It's probable he would be judging by comments he made in July defending McCormack's decision to join the club.
He was quoted in The Star, saying: "No-one in the squad deserved a big-money move more, if that’s what you want to call it. He’d been a great servant here and very influential.
"I don’t know if you can call Fulham a sideways jump.
"I’ve grown up thinking of them as an established Premier League club and people won’t be saying it’s a sideways jump if Fulham get promoted this season. For Ross’ sake I hope they do and I hope we go with them."
As it stands, neither club are well positioned to achieve that goal early on.
Fulham sit below Leeds after five games, with no wins, stuck in 23rd out of 24th in the Premier League table, while Smith's current side are in 18th.
